“The moon is the celestial body closest to us, a piece of the cosmos on our doorstep. Our cosmic companion has always fascinated mankind. What intrigues me the most is its role in the history of science.” Trade journalist in astronomy and astronautics Helmut Hornung has been fascinated by space and its infinite depths since he was a little boy. Small wonder that he was a leading member of the design team for the Luna 1.
No one can withstand the pull of the moon. As a place of utopian yearning, it has been a source of inspiration for men and women since time immemorial. In every culture, the moon has been a key factor in dividing up the year into months. Even our word month is derived from the moon, attesting to this inextricable relationship with human calendars. So, what does this light that travels across the skies in everchanging shape represent to us humans? “Even before the dawn of the common era, Greek natural philosophers made the moon an object of their study: Hipparchus of Nicaea, for instance, calculated the distance from the moon to the Earth, and Pytheas of Massalia discovered the link between the phases of the moon and the tides,” explains Helmut Hornung. “This power to attract water on Earth leads many people to believe even today in a mystical influence of the moon on our natural surroundings—and even on humans themselves.”
It is this mystical quality that has inspired Leinfelder Uhren München to create this latest model. Timeless, elegant and sophisticated, the Leinfelder Luna 1 is available in rose gold and white gold editions. At its heart sits the high-precision hand-wound L-H01 mechanical caliber crafted in German silver by Uhren-Werke-Dresden—with 95% of the work done in-house. The first-ever copy of the latest Leinfelder watch model now graces the wrist of Helmut Hornung!
